- ashdown - "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." 2. My muse tells yours that they have a terminal illness. Raj fidgeted, pretending to flip through the menu. He'd brought Meliorn to Taki's because it was familiar and comfortable, even if it wasn't the most charming place to go. Mel didn't seem to mind, even though tonight Raj had an agenda. He just wasn't sure how to bring it up in conversation, yet he felt Meliorn had a right to know, especially with how close they were becoming. Where it was true that Meliorn had and would live a lot longer than Raj anyway, finding the right words to tell him that his days were numbered left him tongue tied. He'd already tried a couple times before but the way Meliorn smiled at him, well he didn't want to ruin that. He sighed and felt Mel tap him lightly on the hand. Snapping his head up he realized the waitress had been waiting on him, tapping her pencil onto her ticket book in annoyance. "S-sorry! I'll just um... I'll have a burger." He sputtered yet finished with a smile even as the waitress rolled her eyes and made her way back to the kitchen.
Slender fingers came together as he folded his hands on top of the table, eyes downcast, obviously trying to pull the right words together. Mel tapped at his hand again and this time when he lifted his head he swore he could see concern in those dark eyes that watched him with expectation.
Raj had never expected he'd fall for a Seelie, much less a man, but love (?) worked in mysterious ways. And even more than that, he certainly didn't expect for such feelings to be returned. That made this conversation all the more impossible. Raj unfolded his hands, leaving one palm up in the middle of the table, wondering if Meliorn would reach for it. It might have been too much to ask since they were in the public eye. Mel had a reputation on the line after all.
After a deep breath, Raj opened his mouth, allowing the dam to break and the words to flood out in a blunt and straightforward and breathless mess. "Mel, I'm sorry, but I brought you here with a motive and I couldn't figure out how to tell you earlier but I'm sick and I'm going to die and it might be two years from now or tomorrow, but this illness is terminal and it will happen eventually, but it's not contagious and you don't have to worry about being around me but I felt you had a right to know so if you wanted to we could sever ties cleanly and without misunderstandings...." He snapped his jaw shut, dark eyes adverted. He looked spring loaded, ready to bolt out the door in a moments notice as he wasn't sure he really wanted to stick around to hear Mel's answer.

Meliorn could tell that something was troubling Raj, and he intended to get to the bottom of it. The Shadowhunter was distracted and physically here but mentally, somewhere else. When the order was given, Meliorn's eyes locked onto Raj's brown ones. He did not fail to notice his upturned hand, but he did not yet take it. Especially when Raj spoke of having a motive. This captured the Seelie's immediate interest, bracing himself for what he was about to tell him. And he listened to every word. His heart reacted more than his gaze. He could feel it . . . ache. What an unfamiliar feeling and one that he wished he could push away.
Though, even that was a lie. It wasn't just aching, he felt as if it was breaking. His face held no sign of this as he continued to listen. Raj spoke of how he had an illness and that it would eventually claim his life. He reassured him it was not contagious, and offered to sever all ties. When he was done, Meliorn felt his heart restored. He felt it come together. And he knew why. A small smiled formed on Meliorn's lips as he reached for Raj's hand, gently clasping his on top and giving it a light squeeze. "Is that all, Raj?" He asked him, incredibly nonchalantly, considering what his partner had just told him.
Meliorn couldn't help but let out an amused breath. Not quite a laugh but . . . something akin to amusement. "You Shadowhunters can be so dramatic," he teased. He knew the stages of grief in theory, but did quite connect that his denial . . . was a part of it. "You are not going to die." The Seelie said it with so much confidence . . . and Seelies could not give false tongue. He looked intently into Raj's eyes, leaning forward ever so slightly, his hand still on his. "I will not let that happen." Because he would call upon whatever magic he could, to save Raj's life.
