PHYSICAL APPEARANCE:  Alec is very tall and a little bit lanky. Towering over his friends and family, he sometimes appears awkward and uncomfortable in his own skin, hunching down to present himself smaller. He sports a head of thick, neatly cropped, wavy black hair and hazel eyes set deep into a stern yet handsome face. His body is covered in lean muscle, which provides strength as well as agility. Alec is typically found wearing black Shadowhunter gear that covers most of his runes, save for a large "deflect" rune that spans from jaw to shoulder on the left side of his neck.

Personality

BASIC PERSONALITY: Alec comes across as a stern faced, play-by-the-rules authoritarian. Although he is far from perfect, he expects perfection from himself and those around him. He's a relatively closed off individual and is extremely wary of newcomers and people he doesn't know. Serious about his training, about his job, about his life, and yet he also exposes extreme tenderness to those he cares for. Even though his relationship with his parents is at times strenuous, he holds his family in high regard, even doting on his sister, and little brother. He houses a deep respect and almost worship of The Clave, truly believing they have the Downworld's best interests in mind and even during the times when they don't, Alec believes he can step up and represent The Clave morally.

Alec's morals are strict and without question. Honesty and integrity on the top of a long list of personal principles and standards. He finds it difficult to lie and is often blunt and forthright about his opinions and thoughts, following his brain more often than his heart. Yet it is his heart that leads him to bravely defend his friends and family, to be there for them when they need him and even be emphatically willing to lay down his own life for theirs. 

SPECIAL SKILLS:  Alec is extremely proficient in the use of seraph blades, runes and hand to hand combat, yet prefers the bow and arrow as his weapon of choice. His Parabatai bond with Jace Herondale also grants him the ability to use special runes and draw strength from his partner. Alec's relationship with Magnus Bane gives him some leeway in working with the Downworlders he's come to care deeply about.

WEAKNESSES: Alec's weaknesses stem first and foremost from himself. His standoffish nature fails to draw many people toward him and his play by the rules attitude labels him as a stick in the mud, resulting in doubts about his leadership. He's slow to trust and often times judgemental, zeroing in on anyone who may appear threatening to his current relationships.

History

BIRTHPLACE: Alicante, Idris

FAMILY:  Alec is the eldest of three children born to Robert and Maryse Lightwood.

OCCUPATION: Shadowhunter and Head of the New York Institute.

HISTORY: From a young age, Alec was born for leadership. Being a Shadowhunter and following commands were his two best achievements. As a child, Alec strived for perfection, following every rule and law in order to garner the affections and praise of his parents. He admired them for their leadership and came to fall in line directly behind them, even when it meant ostracization from his peers. His parents adoption of Jace, however, came with good timing and acted like a reprieve for Alec. He took to Jace like like a fish to water and the two became inseparable and eventually Parabatai. Unfortunately, along with the happiness of having a friend, came mixed feelings of love and it terrified him. The Clave wasn't too friendly to openly gay relationships and relationships between Parabatai was strictly forbidden. Alec learned quickly how to harness his emotions, tethering them under the weight of responsibility. He learned how to deprive himself and put up a well thought out front. As he reached adulthood, Jace and their sister, Isabelle, were his constant companions, people he would freely bleed for. A content and relatively peaceful life came to an abrupt halt when Clary Fray showed up, stealing Jace's attentions and pumping Alec full of bitterness. Despite his intense dislike of the girl, he still couldn't deny Jace and went along with many of his rule-breaking escapades.

Meeting Magnus Bane would set the course of his life in a different direction altogether. A rocky courtship finally answered by a public, wedding-crashing kiss set a new precedent, would the Clave accept this relationship or deny it? Magnus helped Alec to persevere through judgements and the fowl opinions of others, and it was his siblings and friends who accepted him with open arms. Finally, encouraged with confidence rather punishments, Alec ascended to become the Head of the New York Institute where he strives daily to improve relations between the downworlders and The Clave.
