Appearance

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE:  Rafael is tall, broad and intimidating. Years of training have honed a sturdy and brawny physique that makes him stand out against the more sleek and agile norm for Shadowhunters. He has a handsome face that's naturally scowling, despite what type of mood he may be in. Being of Shoshone descent, Rafael possesses soft brown skin that's littered with scars, honey brown eyes and shoulder length, straight black hair. It's typical to see him wearing black Shadowhunter gear or casual type clothing.

Personality

BASIC PERSONALITY: One look at Rafael and it's easy to see how he might be misunderstood quite often. Despite his bulky figure, he's a quiet and gentle soul driven by justice and equality. Rafael is much more of an observer than he is a speaker, generally holding his tongue unless called upon to speak or having words worthy of being spoken. He believes actions speak louder than words anyway and tries to put this notion to work. Because of his naturally scowly face, he's often avoided but those that have taken the time to get to know him would defend him to the death. Rafael is an optimist. He believes there is good in everyone, Shadowhunter, mundane and Downworlder alike. Difficult situations do little to phase him as he looks to approach every problem with an open mind and a firm belief that nothing is unsolvable.  

Rafael is a member of one of only three family lineages of First Nations Shadowhunters and as such has experienced discrimination while among mundanes. Those incidents have helped to open his eyes to the everyday discriminations Downworlders deal with when it comes to the whims of the Clave and it's leaders. Rafael strives to be a Shadowhunter downworlders can trust to keep his word. That cause is the number one burden that weighs him down, but he believes with his whole heart that the work he does can and will make a difference... someday.

SPECIAL SKILLS: Rafael is a child and animal magnet, as both groups instinctively flock to him with an immediate trust. Raf is proficient in the use of seraph blades and daggers but prefers a runed tomahawk.

WEAKNESSES:  Despite his quiet nature, Rafael has a habit of speaking bluntly when he does open his mouth, and he can unintentionally hurt people in that manner. When he does feel frustrations, he doesn't allow himself to vent them properly and will take it out on himself physically, often working himself to absolute exhaustion before collapsing. There are also times when Raf's desire for justice burns too brightly and clouds his mind from making rational decisions or listening to the advice and thoughts of others. In these times he's stubborn, believing his way is the only way that will work and opposition to him is opposition to what's right. After such episodes, Rafael lets his embarrassment of the situation keep him apologizing too quickly, drawing out misunderstandings and clashes for a lot longer then they need to be.

FAMILY: Rafael is the only child born to Gabriel and Grace Giveslight.

OCCUPATION: Shadowhunter

HISTORY: Rafael experienced a typical Shadowhunter childhood, full of education, training and play. Once he turned 18, he left Idris and circled the globe visiting and helping out where he could at various institutes. With each move he became more and more isolated from his peers and more and more determined to make a difference with or without them. When he turned 35 he settled into New York, accepting missions and orders under Robert Lightwood's guidance. Rafael currently has few people to confide in, but his strict call to duty and his gentle understanding keep him as an ally to all and a formidable member of any team.
